María, born in 1944 in New Orleans, Louisiana, moved to Mexico City at a young age with her mother after her parents' divorce. Encouraged by her aunt, she made her debut in the Mexican cinema in the film Pecado ("Sin"). She continued to star in several movies, including Una Mujer Decente ("A Decent Woman"), La Hija de la Otra ("The Daughter of the Mistress"), Los Amantes ("The Lovers"), Fierecilla ("Little Beast"), and Sígueme, Corazón ("Follow Me, Sweetheart"). At 6, she won an Ariel award for her role in Mi Esposa y la Otra ("My Wife and the Mistress"). She also appeared in the fotonovela Rayito del Sol ("Little Sunray") and showcased her singing talent in 2 Caras Tiene el Destino ("Destiny Has Two Faces") and Los Gavilanes ("The Hawks") alongside Pedro Infante, who praised her expressive acting style.
