Background[]
Bud Humphrey is the quintessential handyman and a hardworking dad, always ready with a solution for any household problem. He cares deeply for his family, particularly his wife and their three kids: Tater, Nellie, and Baby Bud. Despite his unwavering love, Bud struggles with expressing his feelings and showing his affection in ways that his family can understand.
Often, when things get overwhelming, Bud retreats to the hardware store, a haven where he is surrounded by people who not only resemble him but also admire his skills. In this familiar environment, Bud is in his element, always ready to lend a hand. The locals often say, "There's nothing Bud can't fix," a sentiment that both comforts and haunts him. Deep down, Bud knows that the one thing he can't seem to fix is his relationship with his children. He often confides to his friends at the store, "I just don't got the tools for that."
On fathers day, Tater and Baby Bud secretly follow their dad to the hardware store and overhear his heartfelt confession. Initially, they feel guilty, believing that they might be the reason he spends so much time there. However, they soon realize that the store is Bud's safe space, a place that brings him comfort and joy because of his love for tools and fixing things.
With newfound understanding, Tater and Baby Bud accompany their dad back home. Bud, determined to connect with his kids, asks Tater if she would like to spend some time together after he finishes a few repairs around the house. Tater, touched by the offer, eagerly agrees. After putting Baby Bud to bed, Bud steps outside to find Nellie and Tater playing baseball. In a moment of clarity, he decides that the repairs can wait. Realizing the importance of bonding with his children, Bud joins them in their game of catch, embracing the opportunity to strengthen his relationship with them. It's a small but significant step towards fixing the most important thing in his life—his connection with his kids.
