Synopsis
Tater helps Buela fulfill her American dream.
Plot
The primos are sitting around on a quiet day, but this is quickly interrupted by Tater when she wastes the last couple of pages in her diary to drawing butts. With one more blank page left, Tater wants to end it on a good note before she starts a "second volume". At that moment, they are informed that with it being July 4, and with enough money saved up, Buela can now apply for her American citizenship. It turns out that she has been living in the U.S. as a permanent resident due to her marriage to Pop, and has had constant setbacks, combined with legal red tape. Now that things are in order, she can officially apply for citizenship after taking an exam.
The entire family is excited at Buela taking the next step in her life and Tater takes the opportunity to have it be the finale to her volume one diary. While Tater and the primos get to work on training Buela for her exam, Nellie, her parents, and the tios team up to look for fireworks, which are quickly being sold out. They are eventually forced to buy them from the Malfeos after they bought them in bulk to scalp. After averting disaster for the umpteenth time, the entire family head to the state department office where a man named Bill is to leave on vacation soon. At that moment, Bill informs them that Buela cannot apply because she and Pop are not legally married.
Pop forgot to fill out the marriage license, meaning that Buela has to wait another year. Tater manages to convince Bill to change his mind when he admits that he never got to see fireworks. Tater leads the charge to have Buela and Pop married quickly, have her pass her exam, and allow Bill to see fireworks for the first time. Nellie and Gordita get to work making fireworks, Big Nacho trains Pop to write an eloquent love speech to Buela, Lita picks up her French horn to play wedding music, LotLot bakes a new cake, and the everyone else sets up the decorations and wedding set up for the big day, all in under an hour.
At the last minute, Pop and Buela suddenly get cold feet, but Tater manages to snap everything back into place just in time. With Bill acting as reverend, he successfully marries off Pop and Buela, while naturalizing the latter. This is immediately followed by Gordita's frog fireworks, which she also made eco-friendly for Cousin Bud's sake. The day ends on a wonderful note with the entire Ramirez-Perez-Humphrey clan together. Tater comes to the conclusion that her life wouldn't be this exciting without the primos. Now that she has ended her first diary, she can start a new one. After all, she still has plenty of summer left.
